Retinol is the ingredient everyone's heard of. SNAP-8 is the one people ask about after their skin has had enough of retinol. They get compared constantly, which makes sense — they're both aimed at fine lines — but they work in completely different ways.
What SNAP-8 is
SNAP-8 is acetyl octapeptide-3, an eight-amino-acid peptide. It's often described as targeting expression lines specifically — the ones that come from repeated facial movement, like forehead lines and crow's feet, rather than lines from sun damage or general loss of firmness.
The actual difference
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative. It works by increasing cell turnover — essentially speeding up how quickly skin renews itself. That's why it's effective across texture, tone, congestion and fine lines. It's also why it commonly causes dryness, flaking and irritation, especially in the first few weeks.
SNAP-8 is a signal peptide. It doesn't accelerate turnover or exfoliate. It's aimed narrowly at the appearance of expression lines, and it's generally very well tolerated — no purge period, no peeling, no sun sensitivity to manage.
So which one
Honest answer: they're not really competitors, and the framing of "which is better" isn't very useful.
Retinol does more, across more concerns. If your skin tolerates it and you're not pregnant or breastfeeding (worth a conversation with your doctor there), it's a well-evidenced ingredient with decades behind it.
SNAP-8 makes sense if retinol doesn't suit you — reactive skin, rosacea-prone, or you've tried it and your barrier didn't cope. It also makes sense as something to use alongside, since it's not doing the same job.
Can you use both
Yes. They don't conflict. A common approach is retinol at night and a peptide serum in the morning, or alternating nights if your skin is still adjusting to retinol.
What to expect
Slower than retinol, and subtler. Peptides generally need four to six weeks before there's anything to see, and the change is in the appearance of lines rather than a dramatic resurfacing. If you want fast and visible and your skin can handle it, retinol. If you want gentle and you're playing a long game, peptides.
Our SNAP-8 Hyaluronic Acid Serum is the simplest way to start — acetyl octapeptide-3 in a hyaluronic acid base, nothing else competing for attention.
